The exact diameter of our pulley is 318,31 +-0,01 mm. The manufacturing procedure is identic to the manufacturing procedure of a gear. Take a closer look to this topic

It is a very lightweight design with considerantial stiffness, it has low friction bearings, it is made of a special material, it has a special coating and a definated coating hardness. The hardness on depth of case is also important, so we have to take this into consideration before the coating process is done.
In practice you will find pulleys with a special rubber (Vulkolan) or only made in aluminium, but this is not state of the art. The diameter is not exact (probably 318,3 +-0,2 mm) and decrease rapidly.
If you want a quotation for such a pulley with signal generator and display do not hesitate to contact me.

If you were using a V groove pulley, smaller diameter wire would ride closer to the apex of the V than larger wire would. This is because the wire rides on the sides of the V. While the difference might be small (depening upon the angle of the V) the resulting Pitch diameter for the larger wire would be bigger than the resulting pitch diameter for smaller wire.
If you had a large U groove pulley the size of the wire would not matter because it would always ride on the bottom of the groove.

I have to speak up as you are now comparing apples and oranges. The Sikora system is an optical system used to measure wire pitch. The Beta system is a Doppler based system. I agree with the contention that there are still plenty of problems with the laser measurement systems. A single pulley is fine as long as you have constant contact. A caterpuller style counter is superior to this but at the risk of the increased tension upon the wire. If you have a single product/size then the laser system can probably be set to work as advertised.

That both companies have two different basic technologies is of course obviously. 20 years ago I heard: "laser-doppler" is the perfect technology to measure the speed (and length) of a cable. Now read the above menthioned article ...
The problem is that it is very easy to understand a pulley and a caterpuller, probably to easy, and you will see directly the weakness of this methods.
But it is very difficult to understand what happens with/inside optical/laser technology if you don´t have a Ph.D. in physics or optics, it is more difficult to understand what happens between the pay-off and the take-up and the most difficulty is to understend what happens when the measuringinstrument-technology meets the cablesurface (you want to measure the lenght of a product +-0,05%! and not +-0,5%). So if you want to measure a product perfectly (<0,05%) you have to put know-how and technology inside an you have to be very very sensitive (ones more <0,05%!).
The main question is, if you measure 1000 m with a measuring system: are you sure that the length is really 1000 m? Apples or oranges?
The problem with the caterpuller is the elasticity of the belt and the corresponding diameter of the counterpulley. Apples or oranges?

And of course you must also take into some account the room temperature differential between summer and winter (which obviously assumes that the cable factory is not air conditioned and which again obviously descibes the majority of wire and cable factories) and which can cause expansion/contaction of size of measuring devices. Whatever system is in use will be adversely affected. My main point would be such that there is more potential of slippage with a single pully setup. Arguments can be made for all 3 setups and will ultimately come down to money which will make your single pulley device the probable winner.
