Tuber,

Are you talking about "felt dies" for wire enamelling?

Yes, dies for wire enamelling. Surfaces that are not smooth cannot easily be coated using standard enamelling dies, and I've heard the term felt dies. What felt? doesn't the fiber from the felt get into the coated surface?

Felts work very well for some magnet wire enamelling operations. You use the word braid coating tips which says that you are not making magnet wire right?

the comment that surfaces that are not smooth cannot be coated using standard enameling dies is not exactly correct. What are you calling "standard dies"?

If you are talking about a split die that opens wide to be put on the wire you are probably right. If you are talking about a solid die that the wire is threaded through you are wrong.

You are right when you ask if the fibers will get onto the surface of the wire if you are talking about braided wire. If you are talking about solid conductor for magnet wire you are only right if the wrong type felts are used or they are in wrong.

Hi Richard,

For my own understanding, I would sure like to hear you technically discuss felt dies as occasionally used in magnet wire enameling processes. When, where, how and so on. I find this to be a very intriguing subject.

Tuber,

As I understand it, felt braid coating tips are used in the textile industry. The ends of say a small cotton braid will fray and continue to fray once the braid is cut so the tips are coated with glue to prevent fraying and thus allow easy stringing or packaging.

Is that what you are talking about?
