Since I have some time on my hands these days, I found the following. Polyimide is used on fiber optic filament as well as wire and the sizes are quite small. Below are some links to ways to strip the coating off the fiber. Some are are fiber optic filament but should work for copper wire. I have also shown the old formula using NMP. I believe if time is not essential, you can place a sample in the NMP, let sit, and when you remove from the NMP pull the wet end of the sample through a gauze or cheese cloth pad. If not adequately removed, soak some more and repeat process. Once enough is removed, dip in deionized water to remove any NMP and dry.

The following is a typical procedure for removing
soft baked, photocross-linked polyimide.
1. NMP at 85°C for 5 minutes
2. QZ3322 polyimide stripper at 70°C for 5 minutes
3. NMP at room temperature for 5 minutes
4. DI water rinse, dry completely
(Note: NMP is N-Methylpyrrolidone solvent.

Hello Mike,
A razor blade may indeed be the only effective means of mechanically stripping insulation from 40 AWG wire. There are of course thermal means of doing this but you seem not interested in these.

There is or used to be a company called the Eraser Company that made hand held devices that would strip insulation off magnet wire including very small sizes. At some point you may need to chemically strip it.

From what I see I would say that for the 30 big ones Eric is talking about you could buy 8-10 and some go to 48 awg.

hanks Vettecoupe and others. We currently use the eraser cone strippers. However, at a certain point in the process we are unable to use these because 1) the debris they create is too much and 2) they remove too much of the wire core creating a very thin flat and fragile end.
One other area I have been looking into is laser stripping these wires. It seems there are CO2, excimer and yag available. Any thoughts on what wavelength, power, beam size etc would work for the 36, 38 and 40 AWG polyimide coated wire? I would like to keep the equipment profile as small as possible.
