Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) has won an order for submarine cable from the Ooredoo Group to build what was described as “one of the largest international submarine cables” in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region that includes Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman.

A press release said that the project, called the Fibre in Gulf, will connect the GCC countries and Iraq. The length of the cable was not specified, but several estimates put it at about 2,000 km. The project, scheduled for completion in 2027, will provide GCC countries with a low latency, shorter and secure route to a new corridor, connecting Europe with up to 24 fiber pairs and a capacity of up to 720 Tbps. The project will “significantly enhance regional connectivity and solidify Ooredoo’s leadership in digital infrastructure.”

ASN CEO Alain Biston said his company was honored to be chosen for the project. He said that it is a “game-changing initiative that will mark a turning point in regional connectivity across the GCC.”

Ooredoo noted that it has been cementing its position as a leading digital infrastructure provider in the region through its work in AI, data centers, submarine cable systems, fintech and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

Ooredoo Group CEO Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo said that the project aligns with his company’s ambitious strategy to position itself as a key player in addressing the rapidly growing data demand between Asia and Europe.

Last year Ooredoo Oman signed an agreement to land the 2 Africa Cable System in Barka and Salalah in Oman. Of note, the initiative also comes at a time when several regional telecom companies are launching projects to connect Africa, Europe and Asia, partly due to rising security concerns following attacks in recent years.

A press release said that the addition will bolster Marmon’s operation. “With our recent opening of the Hooksett, New Hampshire, marine power cable facility and this strategic acquisition of Marine Tech, we will be able to provide our customers with increased capacity, shorter lead times, and a full offering of cables to support our military and the U.S. Navy ship builders,” said Marmon A&D President Charles Clement.

Based in York, Pennsylvania, Marine Tech is a manufacturer of electrical wire and cable that specializes in the production of circuit integrity cable for use in U.S. Navy ships. Its product lines include offering power, specialty, lightweight, low smoke, silicone, and watertight circuit integrity cabling for mission-critical shipboard applications. Its multiconductor cables are used in ships, oil drilling platforms and other industrial applications that require high performance in challenging environments. The company was co-founded in 2000 by Mark Lindsay and Kosta Kontanis, and began operations with four employees in a 30,000-sq-ft facility in York, Pennsylvania. In 2004, it moved to a larger location in York where it leases 50,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space and has more than two dozen employees.

“We are excited to welcome Marine Tech to the Marmon family. Their expertise in the design and manufacturing of circuit integrity cable will align perfectly with our current shipboard product line and will allow us to support all major Navy ship contracts.” said Robert Canny, senior vice president of Marmon A&D Group.

“This acquisition is an exciting new chapter for Marine Tech, and we are eager to join Marmon. With our combined capabilities, we will bring a new level of value to our customer base,” said owners Mark Lindsay and Kosta Kontanis. Both men will be staying with the business and working to support continued growth.

Industry veteran Richard “Dick” Hall, the retired president and CEO of Champlain Cable Corporation, died Dec. 30, 2024, at age 76. Hall served for 20 years with the company, rising from vice president of sales and marketing to CEO. During that period, he led the company through a turnaround that saw four acquisitions completed, the expansion of one location from 200,000 to 500,000 sq ft, and a 10-fold increase in revenue. After his retirement, he continued to serve as an advisor through 2023. Hall’s prior experience in the wire and cable industry included senior vice president at Electro-Wire, vice president sales & marketing at the Brand-Rex Division of BICC, general sales manager at Harbour Industries, sales manager at A.E. Petsche and his first position, industrial sales, at ITT Surprenant. Throughout his career, Hall was known for his hard work, strong relationships and innovative solutions to turning companies around, but also for having an incredible sense of humor, a love of the industry and its people, and for mentoring many who also now hold high level positions in the wire and cable industry. A WAI Life Member, Hall was a 2004 recipient of the Wire Cable Manufacturers Alliance’s Distinguished Career Award. The Wire Association International’s (WAI) new online training platform was officially launched at the end of January 2025, marking a significant step forward in the Association’s commitment to advancing industry education.

The debut included details about three in-house-produced courses—Introduction to Ferrous Metallurgy, Single Layer Extrusion Overview, and Extrusion Applications—as well as 12 manufacturing safety courses from a third-party content provider, offering a diverse library for industry professionals.

A Jan. 29th Open House webinar, the kick-off for the launch, gave attendees a first-hand look at the platform’s features, course structure, and content, with a live demonstration and Q&A session. “I fully expect the response to the platform and webinar to be phenomenal,” said John Markowski, WAI’s Education Manager. “It’s clear there’s a strong demand for flexible, high-quality educational resources in our industry.”

Development is ongoing, with plans to introduce an online version of the Fundamentals of Wire Manufacturing Course later in 2025. “This course has been the cornerstone of WAI’s training efforts for years and moving it online will allow us to engage a broader audience,” Markowski explained.

At the time of launch, several companies were already prepared to integrate WAI’s training content into their employee onboarding efforts. Additionally, WAI is proud to announce a partnership with the Spring Manufacturers Institute (SMI), which will incorporate select ferrous metallurgy videos into SMI’s courses while also offering their participants access to WAI’s Introduction to Ferrous Metallurgy course. This collaboration expands WAI’s reach and aligns with SMI’s shared mission to support wire manufacturing education.

Steve Fetteroll, WAI’s Executive Director, shared Markowski’s enthusiasm for the platform’s potential. “The industry is evolving, and so are we. This platform reflects WAI’s dedication to meeting the growing need for accessible, top-tier training opportunities.”

Interwire 2025 will serve as a key stage for showcasing WAI’s new training materials to the wire and cable industry. As part of the event, John Markowski will host a session in the WAI Theater in the exhibition hall, highlighting the critical importance of workforce training in today’s evolving industry. The session will include a live demonstration of WAI’s training platform, offering attendees a look at how it can serve as a valuable solution to meet their companies’ training and professional development needs.
