Hi Lawrie,
Wow, this takes the prize for the best question of the week because Wean United must have closed their Vaughn division at least 30 years ago.
My personal experience is that most wire and cable companies overhaul these really great and generally very reliable drawing machines either themselves or in conjunction with some local, fairly large machine shop.
As far as drawing machine rings and cones go, you might check with the Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corp. at americas.kyocera.com/kicc/industrial/wireoffer.html to see if they can supply you with off the shelf ceramic products.
With regards to smaller wear parts such as the nickel bands in the electric annealers, they are generally made locally from sheet and then rolled to the proper shape with an adjustable 3 wheel rolling unit once the strip is properly sized. (I expect however that you are already making your own now.)
If however you are looking for much heavier mechanical components like gearing and shafts, we're back to the local machine shop overhaul concept.
We could not find any appropriate information on the web or in the WAI Virtual Trade Show above.
Hopefully others will have more positive information for you but in the meantime, perhaps you could tell us the actual extent of the the spares you are looking for. Is this for rod breakdown, intermediate or fine wire machines?
Kindest regards,

Thanks for the info Peter.
Actually the machine is to be used for Aluminum, so dont have to worry about annealler etc.
seeing it will be a new installation was looking for schematics etc to help speed it up. But as you say the information probably doesnt exsist anymore, leave it up to the engineers thats why they get the big bucks!
Was interested in the availability of spares like shafts and gears just in case.
Thanks again.

Lawrie,
Try several of the used machinery dealers. Details can be found in the wirenet.org Virtual Trade Show. Click on the Virtual Trade Show icon, then Search; VTS System. In the Business Type box, click on Used Machinery Suppliers and Submit. You should get a list of 85 companies. I know that Wire and Plastic Machinery in Bristol CT does have various Vaughn machines in their inventory. I'm sure plenty of other people do as well.

Lawrie;
Since this is a new / old installation, I guess the machine has been rebuilt or at least refurbished. If this was done far away from your plant without your company representatives watching, please remember to have the gear backlash and seals checked carefully before it goes into production.
You certainly don't want premature gear failure or the shaft seals leaking and cross-contaminating both oils.

the Vaughn machines were once referred to as the Cadilac of wire drawing machines. I have always preferred the ring block type machine. Again when at General Cable (1968 - 1973)we were able to increase the speed of the machines but it also doubled the noise level. From the sound I am fairly certain that the gear drive would probably wear out a lot faster.
Unlike most of the step cone machines, the Vaughn machines were gear driven and If I remember right they were straight cut gears and designed to run a fixed speed of about 2,100 feet/minute.
The rings we used were from Coors but I am certain that there are several companies that can supply them today.
