Just a few thoughts: there are companies that have been building traversing devices for a long time, back when software was something that you purchased to wear.

Many of the optical sensors function as non-contact limit switches so when they "see" a bad build up they shorten or lengthen the traverse length so that "you" can fill in the low areas until it catches up. Probably not perfect, especially when the wire is put on high speed coil winders.

I am certain that there are software engineers that can write or develop great programs that work with things like the optical switches but since there are so few of them, what do you do when you have a problem with software or the hardware it drives?
